Homeland Security Wallet Wallet and boxes Miguel Cortez 2003           Homeland Security Wallet is a play on the consumerism and propaganda that we are constantly bombarded with through the government controlled corporate US Media. This monster tries to control our needs and emotions by manipulating our feelings through fear and deception. From the Sept. 11 massacre discrepancies that are not investigated as to how much the government knew, to the sudden disappearance of Bin Laden in the news being replaced with a new media manufactured “evil”(Saddam) in a matter of several months. I say buy duct tape and why not protect your cash from terrorists?

Micro worlds 1 Oil and acrylic on canvas Miguel Cortez, 2007 Several years ago I did a series of paintings that dealt with imaginary aerial landscapes. With this new series of work I go to the opposite end and imagine microscopic environments plus imaginary abstract forms and shapes. For inspiration I looked at decaying textures that I came across such as found rusted and cracked objects, paint peeling off walls and buildings, oils stains on the pavement and other examples of urban/nature decay. - Miguel Cortez, August 2007

Everyday observationsHandmade book of digital photos2005We all have everyday rituals that shape our lives, especially those of us that work full-time; we wake up at a certain time, shower, brush our teeth, walk, wait for the bus/train, or drive. And after you spend 8 hours a day doing something you may or may not like, then you go home, sleep, wake up and repeat process. This may seem monotonous and boring, but for me, I found inspiration to do the following art series: a digital documentation of shapes, patterns, textures, scenes that I encounter on my way to and from work everyday. ——-mcortez, february 2005

Building a better mousetrap 1 digital prints on canvas (each is 7 x 9”) 2005 miguel cortez Advertising is everywhere; you look at any sporting event and ads are all over the field. Corporations need to bombard you about their products and they do it whenever and wherever they can, and since they want your attention why not have them advertise on mousetraps? What better time than to think about a corporation’s product than when you pick up your trap with a dead rodent? These corporations deserve your attention since most either exploit overseas labor(Nike), exploit workers/unions(Walmart, Enron), produce cheap synthetic unhealthy food(McDonalds), or influence and profit from war and oil(Halliburton, ExxonMobil).
